Chapters & learning objectives
1. Models of SLP Services in the ICU
Participants will examine referral patterns and current resources to drive referrals for swallowing assessment in the ICU. Priorities for referrals will be identified to assist the multidisciplinary team in identifying necessary and appropriate candidates.
2. Screening Dysphagia in the ICU
There are no losers in screening tools. The question is which tool will accomplish the intended goal(s) for the multidisciplinary team. Participants will examine who is appropriate for screening, who is trained to screen, and at which time.
3. Efficient and Purposeful Medical Chart Review
A comprehensive review of the medical record provides the necessary information about the impact of the patient’s diagnosis on swallowing function. The PARTNERS framework will help guide the medical history interview to identify patient-specific goals for an optimal treatment plan.
4. Aligning Approaches to Swallowing Assessment With Goals of Care
Each clinician knows the tools that are available within each institution for swallowing assessment. Application of these tools within the ICU requires complete understanding of the multidisciplinary team’s and patient’s/caregivers’ goals within the framework of PARTNERS. Aligning goals requires skills to synthesize information and develop a patient-centered approach to assessment.
